When we form an impression of someone, we tend to make our inferences based on bits of information.   We then make ‘attributions’ about what causes that person’s behaviour, and use ‘implicit personality theories’ to explain links in a person’s characteristics.  When we first meet someone, we use our schemas to make assumptions about that person. We apply these schemas and then add further information stored in our long-term memory.  Some of these inferences may be true, and others not true.

First impressions tend to be durable for a number of reasons:

  • 1-Many of us are confident in our judgements.
  • 2-We interpret new information in a way that complies with our existing impression
  • 3-We tend not to remember new information that may be at variance with our existing impression – We tent to engage in self-fulfilling prophecies in the sense that we are more likely to behave towards someone in a way that will elicit behaviour that matches our impression of them.
