- Periods of clinical depression.
- Periods(over several days at a time) of being in an elated or irritable mood to the extent that you are not your ‘normal’ self , and you experience:
** Racing thoughts
**Talking so fast that other people find it hard to interrupt.
**Being so easily to distracted by your own thoughts or things around you that you find it hard to stay focused on anything .
** Not needing to sleep more than a few hours per night over several days.
** Doing pleasurable things that are risky or might cause future harm such as getting into agreements or fights, spending money you don’t have or being sexually active with many partners.
Note that people without a diagnosis of bipolar disorder also report some of these experiences , but they don’t cause as much disruption to their lives.

Don’t forget breakthrough episodes lasting a short duration. I have been told to cope with these and assume medications will not stop them from coming thru.

It might enhance this post to talk about co-occurring highs and lows or mixed states associated with bipolar illness for some people. For me this manifests in pervasive anxiety much of the time. It is somewhat treatable but not superbly so.
